STORYTELLING 

 

Storytelling is a powerful way for scientists to make their research memorable, relatable, and compelling. In this session, participants will gain basic techniques, tips, and resources for using storytelling to share science messages with diverse audiences.

VIDEO COMMUNICATION
 

Videos are one of the most commonly consumed forms of media and increasing being used to communicate research to large audiences. Learn how to translate your research into a compelling visual story from Jai Ranganathan, a co-founder of SciFund Challenge. This session will focus on building a script and storyboard, tricks to record high-quality audio, and briefly introduce you to available editing software to polish your video. 

GETTING INVOLVED IN OCEAN POLICY
​

There are many pressing challenges to ocean health today and together, leaders in ocean science and policy examine how we can work within the policy-making process to address these challenges. Make your message matter by learning how to get involved in policy as a student or researcher. You will walk away from this session with concrete actions you can take while successfully navigating objectivity versus advocacy.

CITIZEN SCIENCE IN YOUR RESEARCH

Citizen science is an increasingly popular way to simultaneously do research and engage the public. Using technology and a large network of interested people, this participatory approach to research opens up new opportunities. With other traditional sources of funding becoming less dependable and with the growing importance of making science accessible to community members, more people are embarking on citizen science efforts. Learn from our panel of local experts on what it takes to run a successful citizen science project, how to avoid common pitfalls, and how to take advantage of existing platforms and data collection efforts.
